Had the engine out over the winter. Fitted new clutch lining’s,
Fitted new set of Pistons and rings and replaced a cracked cam follower and all
tappet bolts. Back together now and run over 150 miles. Compression up to 135
psi+ now. Goes up hills in top where before had to use 3rd. Had prop shaft
balanced what a difference that made hard to believe it’s the same car.

Replaced the pipes to the oil cooler on my Renault 5 Gordini Turbo. What a job! Getting the old oil filter sandwich plate off was easy; new one really hard! In the end I had to remove the inlet manifold, which you can't do unless you remove the wiper mechanism, which you can't do unless you take it apart in situ!

Then the new cooler pipes were in the way of doing up the bolts for the manifold. Then fitted the alternator, only to find it was faulty, so had to change it!

Aaaargh... I bought an oil thermostat to fit at the same time but now I can't face it as replacing the pipes was so hard. I'll do it at some point. Luckily I can cut the pipes closer to the cooler where access is much better.

Next to so: sort bad misfire under boost and replace front brakes. Then sort the scratch out that I made last time I put the car in the garage when I was tired after working on it! Luckily that area needs sorting anyway as my restorer bodged it and the filler cracked.

I'll probably pay someone to do the brakes as the discs are a very tight press fit. May also get the bearings replaced at the same time as they're a bit noisy (not overly so)....

Andrew. P.s. As I live in Deal I have booked my family's cars into the show in May. If you see some Renault 5s, come and say "hi"!

Oh and I know it's not a classic, but due to an unfortunate incident in the snow, the electric swivelling towbar on my BMW was bust! Couldn't find one at any breaker in UK and baulked at paying a grand from BM! Managed to source one from a crashed 5'er on German eBay for about 250. Hurragh!

Its all been quiet on the updates from me, but we have started looking at bits for my sisters Fiat 500. That most of you would have forgotten about by now I expect.

Anyone else been up to anything??

PostSubject: Re: So what have you been doing on your cars?   Sun Mar 17, 2013 4:03 am

OK I presume most of you know about my fun and games on the trip home from Manston.

Anyway having waited for, and returned, wrong items ordered, Finally got all the right parts for the work to be done, not needed to be done but just little jobs to make life easier, last set of screws arrived this morning.

Yesterday had the car running and charging properly, modified the way of fitting the control box, no need to crawl around under the dash.

Never had a full set of lights working so bought new set of lights for the gauges, also a strip of led tape for the original speedo, that has never had any lights and should be a shrouded bulb that shines through a couple of windows in the speedo hub, nowhere to fit one / two so a strip of leds should do.

Got to make a housing for the cycle computer so that can also be lit

Things are easier to do if the dash is dropped down, also easier with the steering top bush freed off.

I now need to replace the only live, non ignition, cable that runs behind the dash, from the starter/battery feed to the ammeter, having nearly set fire to the car AAGGHH.

Lucky that the battery cable was only pushed on and not yet tightened after fitting the control box.

The dash had dropped a bit more, while connecting some lights, and the cable screw to the ammeter was shorting on the steering column.

I did say I was going to rewire the car but (*&^

All good fun
