my 1968 VW Beetle 1500 .... bought off ebay for £502 and a budget of about £200 for restoration!

i've had a crash course in welding and am on a steep learning curve, but so far, so good .... fabricating all repair sections out of scrap sheet steel (hence the bug being named Scrappy Bug!)

It's difficult to believe that I taught Lorraine to weld less than two weeks ago and she is already butt welding very well (good penetration to the other side visible!) and making her own repair sections. Yes, we can buy this corner as a complete panel, and that is what i would do on a customer car, but funds are tight and "Scatty Bird" currently has more time than money. (Plus I'm not charging for the workshop space!) She is fulfilling her lifelong dream (since age 3) to own her own classic VW Beetle.

The above welds were ground smooth and that will be seen in a later photo.

BTW, I think we did well on this car as the engine runs very well, has a sports exhaust and the front brakes are brand new!

cheers
John

Fabricated the repair panels out of scrap steel and bent them using a shrinker/stretcher tool ..... i'm happy with that

the visible inside rust from a rotten heater channel will be replaced with a new one
