PostSubject: DLM - ON the road - OFF Road    Mon Aug 08, 2011 8:48 pm

Got a bad water leak from somewhere.
Used about two litres over 50 miles, to Duxford, yesterday

Had it running to temp after refill but no discernible sign of any leak
Might be from the water-pump bearing, hope it's as simple as that..
The coolant was sprayed all over the underside of the bonnet and out of the grill by the carbs, but I think thats from the 'on the move' airflow

Had a fresh sheet of cardboard under it over night, not checked yet
Should show from were, I hope.

Roger

Sorted.

I hope!

Re-torqued and a 1/4 turn seems to have fixed it.

Will have to have a run out somewhere with it.

It, thankfully, was a small leak at the front corner.

No ingress into the cylinder, no water in the oil no oil in the radiator.

There was no overheating or any running issues.

So will have to check it out for the weekend

Lee, I have sent a PM

Hi Rob

Didn't notice any improvement.

I know what you mean as my old beetle used to fly when it was raining.

So far all seems OK, no run out today as it was issing down all day.

Must remember to take a bottle for water with me, or, as I said to Lee, a funel if its raining haha

OK one water leak cured, and another rears its head.

An easy one though just tightened the bottom hose clip.

The clutch problem seems not as bad as thought, mind you I don't use the clutch often, stop and start, slave cylinder still wet though.

The car started to misfire at low revs on the way home, had the pugs out they still look new - ish.

Checked the points, no gap so I thought.

While fiddling I noticed the contact point on the spring section was loose.

That meant the points were not opening properly and it was probably only opening on the bounce at higher revs.

Swag-ed it over and there tight again.

That sorted raised the car to jet wash the underside in case any hydraulic fluid had blow over anything.

Was about to take the front wheels off and found the O/S had a lot of play, about two inches.

The track rod end was loose, tried to tighten no luck, started to undo the nyloc nut and found to be finger tight and the track rod end fell out.

Still don't know from what car originally so sent them off to be matched.

The company covers most known makes, can't find any that match so they are making a set for me.

£108 including VAT and carriage. should be here Friday.

Apart from that all is 100% haha

OK more problems.

Have found that one of the front wheels has a bad radial crack around the Centre, almost a complete circle, it also radiates out to a wheel stud hole.

Noticed as I was cleaning and wondered where the rust mark was from.

Was going to contact these people to get the rears refurbished due to running out of true, as noticed on the Faversham convoy.

http://www.mwsint.com/OurWireWheels.asp

Now looks likes they will have four wheels to refurbish.

Might bite the bullet and get chrome, or stainless, wires all round.

He's looking to find 17 inch rims before he quotes for a set of wires.

Blimey Roger! You have been busy havent you!

Do you know what the wire wheel was originally from?

I dont know if you go but down at Beaulieu motor museum on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of september there is the Beaulieu autojumble, basically its a HUGE bootfair of car parts. Its well worth the trip down there to have a look and se what you can find. If not, I am going down there and I can have a look for you.

Tom

The wheels ere made for the car, both front and rear.

The hubs on the front are 1935 Standard 9 with wheel rims 4.5x17

The rears are Ford 100e centres with 5.25x16 rims

Sent some photos to MWS and they recon no problem to rebuild/refurbish.

They did say that the rears could be trued depending on how far out they are.

But would definitly be better.

They need 4 to 7 days just to check them over to see what needs doing.

All wrapped and ready for collection on Monday, carriage for all four with tyres fitted £37

Thats less than the petrol I would use to deliver them.

I'll have to have words again about wires, I think he thought I meant centre lock (knock on), this would mean hub adaptors/spacers and add three inches overall to the track, this would be too wide as the tread would just outside the wings.

Wires all round would look good.

PostSubject: Re: DLM - ON the road - OFF Road    Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:02 am

[OK I've decided the DLM is off road till all the bodywork is sorted.

Finally got the track rod ends, can now steer the car, can't get far though no wheels yet.

Might be up to eight weeks, that was on the 9/9/11.

Seems the centres are scrap as well, already new that.

Told Greg, my contact at MWS, "that was the reason they were sent to you".

Anyway new centres are not available off shelf so new ones to be specially made.

First estimated time was four weeks for re-build and back to me, going to be four weeks till they get the re-manufactured centres.

So adding up to eight weeks.

Mind you I get the impression four weeks is their 'cover my back' time scale.

Not too worried, will then have new wheels on the front, and the rears are within tolerance.

Was looking through last years re-build photos and found this.

Looks like the wheels were on the way out last April.

This was a few weeks ago when I noticed the crack

Between the two stud holes, and closer look it goes further around

This was April last year.

Already showing

Have had a bit of vibration, put it down to the prop shaft, but looks like it might not be, have to wait and see

I am, ironically, please that the clutch cylinder went at the H4H show.

Might have saved my life.

___________________________

So now that this year is over for the DLM, I've resigned myself to that.

My winter project

As the bodywork is not up to the standard I want, rushed the finish last year, 35 years in boxes the excitement got the better of me.

So today I have stripped off all the lights, all the wings, screens and number plates, dropped the dash from the body.

Stripped out the cockpit padding, will try and do a better job.

Make a profiled timber frame to follow the cockpit line, what ever, it needs to be a better fit around the top.

Bare body

Only eight bolts and it can be lifted off.

But with the car on stands no room for it if I did.

One large dent, the main one

Well that went quickly

A few of the bad areas.

Decided to re-fill / blend out the rivets down the side of the body.

OK that was how I bought it in the 70's but I prefer the smooth surface.

Also that wing could do with smoothing out.

This was in the 70's

I think it looks tidier

Still keeping it Yellow though

Just hope I'm back and better soon, as well

Heart op on Tuesday didn't go as well as hoped, so got to see the doc on Friday next week to see what next.

Not spending the time on the car as I should be but we'll get there.

Got till next May before the MOT. even if it goes down there with just undercoat.

At the last resort could lift the body off, one man job.

Pop it on top of the Volvo and take it to be done, sooner DIY though.

Roger

PS no guesses on the what's this car yet.

Ohh mate, hope all is well! And at the end of the day, your well being is more important than the car! Hope your on the mend soon!

Had an email from WMS, wheels will be back next week.

So I will be able to move the car to start the bodywork and painting.

Have made a pair of tonneau covers, a full cover, and a half cover for driving.

Loving the Tonneua covers, does this mean the colour co-ordinated umbrella will be going? and good news on the wheels.

Wheels are back

Better than the originals, centres are thicker and a one piece construction.

Just got to get some new chrome dome wheel nuts and a pair of chrome centres to set them off

Well worth the wait.

Started on re-doing the body work last September.

One minor heart op then medication over dosing by the hospital, progress has been a bit slow.

But won't be long before she's out and about again.

Anyway, dents, dings and general bad pre-prep, last rebuild, being sorted, not sure if anyone remembers but the aluminium rivets holding the front and rear together, down the side of the cockpit, anoyed me. So have filled over them and it looks better.

And the old damage to the O/S rear wing filled and smoothed over.

Few coats of paint.

Few more to apply, wings have had one coat.

Will give them another three or four and see how they look.

Another couple of coats with roller on this weekend.

Wings need another couple, maybe, then leave till next weekend to harden.

With luck start bolting it back together next weekend.

Then it will start raining again
