Mini 1979 1100 Special

My mini has been in our family from new, purchased by my Uncle as a second car for my Auntie to use for the school run. I purchased the car from them in 1987 when I was 17 and learnt to drive in it. At the time the car only had 13,000 miles on the clock and, having been garaged since new, was like a new car. I used the mini regularly to commute to work, use for holidays and take to mini shows where it won some trophies.
With a family on the way in 1996 the mini thought it would give way to a larger car by blowing it’s head gasket and it seemed right to take the car off the road and restore it, before it was too late because the usual signs of tin worm were becoming visible. Luckily, my Dad is an ex motor body engineer from the 1960s and did most of the body work including new front panels and cills. The new paint was added by both my Dad and myself, each of us learning as we went along. We seemed to use gallons of paint!
I turned my hand from carpentry to mechanic and rebuilt all the mechanics, including a complete engine rebuild – replacing and restoring every part.
The wheels were polished by hand. The upholstery was carried out using material from another set of seats. I learnt how to sew and stitched and fitted the new vinyl roof myself. I installed new carpets and decals and hey presto, 9 years later in 2005 “Vroom, 1st time!”.
Since it has been back on the road many 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes have come our way in recognition for all our own work.

Those stripes are typical from 1979 not on minis but on other BL cars it was one of their things, albeit in different guises like the mgb le

yeah lol, the garage really could do with a tidy up, i know of 2 other mini specials that are being partly restored (both silver) and another low mileage one that we meet at the mini shows, people are starting to realise that these cars are getting very rare now.
we will be doing a lot of the mini shows during 2012, and hopefully the london to brighton too.....Smile
